Quick ways to narrow your dinner

Choose a shortcut or open the full filters - every number is calculated from the 182 published recipes in the generator. “Median” means half cost less per serving and half cost more.

What should I make for dinner tonight?

It's the nightly question, and a full fridge rarely makes it easier. This free random dinner generator answers it in one tap: press Generate and you get a real, budget-friendly recipe to cook tonight - not a vague “make pasta,” but an actual meal with its cost per serving and cooking time up front. Think of it as a random meal generator built for genuinely cheap dinner ideas, where every suggestion is a dinner you can actually afford.

How the generator works

Press Generate Random Dinner and we pick one recipe at random from every dinner we have published. Want to narrow it down? Open Narrow it down and cap the budget, the price per serving, or the cooking time, or choose a category or serving size. The filters are optional - you never have to fill in a form to get a result. Every pick links straight to the full recipe, with the ingredients, steps, and our built-in Cook Mode.

Why Budget Plates results are different

Most “random food generators” spin up a food name, a restaurant, or a wheel. Ours returns a real, photographed recipe you can cook tonight - and because Budget Plates costs every recipe down to the plate, you see the total cost and the price per serving before you commit. No mystery meal, no dinner you can't afford. Most of our recipes come in well under $2 a serving.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Random Food Generator actually random?

Yes. Every click picks uniformly at random from our published recipes, and we skip the one you just saw so you never get an instant repeat. Under a test seed the sequence is reproducible, but in normal use it is genuinely random.

How is this different from a food wheel or random food picker?

Most random food generators spin up a food name or a restaurant. Ours returns a real, photographed Budget Plates recipe you can actually cook tonight - with the total cost, the price per serving, the cooking time, and the servings shown up front.

Can I set a budget or a time limit?

Yes, but only if you want to. The filters are optional - you never have to fill anything in to generate. You can cap the total cost, the price per serving, or the cooking time, or choose a category or serving size, then hit Generate.

Does it only use cheap recipes?

It uses every published Budget Plates recipe, and most already come in well under $2 a serving. If you set a budget filter, only recipes within it can be generated.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up, no login, and nothing is stored about you. The generator runs entirely in your browser.
